Amanda Brugel

Pointe Claire resides in a quiet area of Montreal Island known as West Island. The West Island, to those who are unfamiliar with it, is an extensive area that extends from Lachine to the west. Amanda Brugel was born there however her stay there was short. Brugel was an aspiring young lady in Courtice Ontario just outside Oshawa. The first goal she had was to become an expert dancer. But, a growing spurt caused her to outgrow her dance partners she had. In a recent interview with the Toronto Star, she confessed that "In heels, I'm 6 feet 1 inches." Once I outgrew male partners at that point, I gave up. Many dancers make the transition into acting. As for the Brugel family, it was their drama teacher who encouraged her in that direction. It was the teacher who recommended she take on a part in the school's annual production. She auditioned and was eventually cast as the lead in Anne of Green Gables. A Fine Arts Talent Scholarship led her to York University, where she was a theatre student and earned a Bachelors of Fine Arts in 2000. Through the years since, Brugel has landed roles on more than 60 productions across small and big screens drawing the most media attention after she was offered the role in the role of Rita in the award-winning television series The Handmaid's Tale (pictured below). Brugel, the only Canadian of the Season 1 The Handmaid's Tale cast and seen only occasionally, was the only Canadian.
